Preserving chickpeas at home offers control over quality and freshness, saves money, and provides convenience in meal preparation.

Homemade chickpeas are nutritious, versatile, and free from additives found in commercial products. Overall, it’s a simple, sustainable practice that enhances culinary flexibility and promotes healthier eating habits.

Buying dried chickpeas in bulk is typically more economical than purchasing canned ones, especially if you consume chickpeas frequently in your cooking. This also reduces packaging waste associated with single-use cans.

Ingredients

  • Dried chickpeas

  • Water

      Step by Step Instructions

      Step 1

Soaking: Place the dried chickpeas in a large bowl and cover them generously with water. Let them soak overnight or for at least 8 hours.

      Step 2

Cooking: After soaking, rinse the chickpeas thoroughly and transfer them to a large pot. Cover them with fresh water and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and let the chickpeas simmer until they are tender. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size and freshness of the chickpeas, but it usually takes about 60-90 minutes.

      Step 3

Filling: Once the chickpeas are soft, you can fill clean jars or containers with them, leaving some space at the top. Ensure the chickpeas are covered with boiling water or a light salt solution, leaving a little space between the water and the lid of the jar. The important part is to have the chickpeas fully submerged in water.Seal the jars tightly with lids or canning rings. Make sure the jars are properly sealed to ensure good preservation.

      Step 4

Sterilization: For a longer shelf life, sterilize the sealed jars in a large pot of lightly boiling water. Ensure the jars are halfway submerged in water and boil them for about 15 minutes. The process of longer sterilization can also be conducted in an oven at 120°C (250°F) for approximately 30 minutes for added convenience.

      Step 5

Cooling and Storage: After sterilization, carefully remove the jars from the water and let them cool at room temperature. Once cooled, store them in a cool, dark place like your pantry or another dry area. The homemade preserved chickpeas should last for several months.
