One interesting fact about this bread is that the braiding of the dough is not just for aesthetics – it actually serves a functional purpose as well. The braids help the bread to rise evenly, and the resulting loaf has a tender crumb and a soft texture.

In many cultures, Easter braid bread is also associated with symbolism and traditions. For example, in some European countries, the bread is decorated with colorful dyed eggs, which represent new life and rebirth.

 

 

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 420-450 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet of instant yeast
  • 50g white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 180 ml unsweetened almond milk (warmed)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) vegan butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 60 ml aquafaba (chickpea brine) or 1 flax egg (1 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tbsp water)
  • 70g raisins (optional)

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

 

 

 

    Step by Step Instructions

    Step 1

    In a large bowl, whisk together flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.

    In another bowl, mix warmed almond milk, melted vegan butter, vanilla extract, and aquafaba or flax egg.

    Step 2

    Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until the dough comes together. Add raisins if using.

    Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes or until smooth.

    Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.

    Step 3

    After the dough has risen, punch it down and knead it briefly.

    Divide the dough into three equal parts and roll them out into long ropes.

    Step 4

    Braid the ropes together and place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet.

    Step 5

    Cover with a damp cloth and let the dough rise again for about 30-40 minutes.

    Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

    Bake the Easter braid for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

    Step 6

    While the braid is baking, mix the glaze ingredients together in a small bowl.

    Step 7

    Once the braid is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.

    Drizzle the glaze over the braid and serve.
